Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)

IFC is an open, vendor-neutral data exchange format through which any BIM information may be exchanged and shared among software applications. IFC is an official International Standard ISO 16739-1:2018. IFC is a complex data model to represent both the geometry and semantic structure of a building model using an object-oriented approach. This education module will focus on the semantic representations. Topics to be covered in this module include the object-based inheritance hierarchy (i.e., IfcRoot, IfcObject, IfcProduct and their subclasses) and object relationships (such as spatial aggregation hierarchy, relationships between spaces and their bounding elements, and the specification of materials).
